Argentinië

Het WK 2026 wordt door een recordaantal van 48 landen betwist, in plaats van 32, waarvan 16 Europese teams.

Hierdoor is ook het aantal beschikbare slots per continent toegenomen.

  • Europa (UEFA): 16 plaatsen - BEKIJK HIER DE STAND IN DE WK-VOORRONDE

  • Afrika (CAF): 9 directe plaatsen + 1 in intercontinentale play-offs

  • Azië (AFC): 8 directe plaatsen + 1 in intercontinentale play-offs

  • Zuid-Amerika (CONMEBOL): 6 directe plaatsen + 1 in intercontinentale play-offs

  • Noord- en Midden-Amerika (CONCACAF): 6 directe plaatsen (inclusief VS, Mexico en Canada als gastlanden) + 2 in intercontinentale play-offs

  • Oceanië (OFC): 1 directe plaats + 1 in intercontinentale play-offs

De teams worden bij de loting in december 2025 verdeeld in twaalf groepen van vier, waarbij de nummers één, twee en de acht beste nummers drie doorgaan naar de zestiende finales. Gedurende 40 dagen zullen in totaal 104 wedstrijden gespeeld worden.

Uniek aan deze editie is ook dat het toernooi wordt georganiseerd door drie landen — ook een primeur.
